Hill Country Journey: 5 days in the tea hills

6 min readInspiration

Climb away from the coast and Sri Lanka turns cool, green and quietly magical. This five-day route links the cultural heart of Kandy to the tea towns of Nuwara Eliya and Ella — and includes what may be the most beautiful train ride on earth. Pack a light layer; the highland mornings have a chill the lowlands never do.

As with all our itineraries, every stop links to stays, tea experiences and transport you can reserve on SriLankaX, so you can shape the journey around the pace you like.

Day 1

Settle into Kandy

Cradled by hills around its lake, Kandy is where the island's traditions feel most alive. Circle the water in the late-afternoon light, then join the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, when drums roll and the halls fill with lotus flowers.

Day 2

Gardens, culture & first tea

Give the morning to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, where a giant Java fig spreads like a green cathedral. In the afternoon, catch a Kandyan dance show, or begin your tea education at an estate on the edge of town before the climb tomorrow.

Day 3

Up to Nuwara Eliya

The road climbs through tea country to Nuwara Eliya — around three hours, and worth every minute as the hills unfold. Tour a working estate like Damro Labookellie or Mackwoods, taste the difference altitude makes, and wander the town's colonial gardens they still call "Little England."

The higher you climb, the lighter the leaf — altitude you can taste in the cup.
Day 4

The train to Ella

This is the day you'll remember. Take the hill-country train down to Ella, leaning out of an open carriage as tea slopes, waterfalls and forest roll past. In Ella, gentle walks to Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge deliver big scenery for little effort.

Good to know: Train sections and timetables can change — check which stretch is running before you travel, and reserve a seat when you can.

Day 5

One more valley view

Squeeze in a last highland morning — the Halpewatte tea factory over the valley, or the climb up Ella Rock — before you move on, whether that's back to the coast or onward to your next chapter. The hills have a way of making you promise to return.
