Surf & Sun: a 7-day south-coast surf trip

6 min readInspiration

Warm water, friendly waves and a string of laid-back beach towns within an easy tuk-tuk of each other — the south coast is where surfers come to learn, to level up, and to do very little in between. This week takes you from your first stand-up at Weligama to the reefs of Ahangama and the palm-ringed calm of Hiriketiya.

Best from roughly November to April, when the south-coast swell is clean and sunny. Every stop links to stays, surf lessons and board rentals you can reserve on SriLankaX.

Days 1–2

Learn to surf at Weligama

Start where everyone starts. Weligama's wide, sandy-bottomed bay serves up long, forgiving rollers, and the beach is lined with surf schools and easy-going cafés. Two days is enough to find your feet, catch your first green wave, and fall for the rhythm of surf-town life.

Days 3–4

Level up around Ahangama

A short hop east and you're in the improver belt. Midigama's reef breaks — Ram's Right and Lazy Left among them — offer punchier, longer rides, while Ahangama has quietly become the coast's coolest surf town, with spots spread over 20 kilometres and a hip café-and-camp scene onshore.

Learn, level up, unwind — one warm coast, in that order.
Days 5–6

Unwind at Hiriketiya

End on the island's most photogenic cove: Hiriketiya, a horseshoe of turquoise water ringed by jungle. There's a gentle wave for easy sessions, yoga and wellness spots onshore, and a whole culture of doing beautifully little. Stay two nights and you still won't want to leave.

Surf smart: Check tide, wind and swell before paddling out, respect the line-up, use reef-safe sun protection, and don't take on an unfamiliar reef alone.

Day 7

One last session, then onward

Dawn patrol if the surf's up, a slow breakfast if it isn't, then point the tuk-tuk toward your next stop. You'll leave salty, sun-warmed and already scheming a return — maybe for the east coast next time, when the season flips.
